What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive treatment that places you inside a comfortable pressurised chamber while you breathe oxygen-rich air.

The increased atmospheric pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into your blood plasma, enabling it to reach tissues that may not receive optimal oxygen under normal conditions.

This increase in oxygen availability helps support the body’s natural healing and recovery processes by delivering oxygen deeper into muscles, joints and other tissues.

At BH Physio, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is offered as part of a broader rehabilitation strategy and is not intended to replace physiotherapy or medical treatment. Instead, it complements personalised rehabilitation programmes designed by qualified physiotherapists.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

Under normal conditions, oxygen is primarily transported throughout the body by red blood cells.

Inside a hyperbaric chamber, increased pressure allows significantly more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma. This enhanced oxygen delivery enables oxygen to reach areas where circulation may be reduced due to injury or inflammation.

The additional oxygen supports several important physiological processes, including:

  • Supporting the body’s natural tissue repair mechanisms
  • Assisting normal recovery following physical activity
  • Helping manage inflammation associated with rehabilitation
  • Supporting healthy circulation
  • Promoting overall cellular recovery

By improving oxygen availability throughout the body, HBOT works alongside physiotherapy to support rehabilitation and recovery.

Who May Benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may benefit a wide variety of patients, particularly when incorporated into a professionally managed rehabilitation programme.

People who may benefit include:

Athletes

Athletes often use Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to support recovery between training sessions and competitions.

HBOT may help support recovery from:

  • Muscle strains
  • Ligament injuries
  • Sprains
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Training fatigue

It can become part of an overall performance recovery strategy alongside physiotherapy, strength rehabilitation and mobility work.

Patients Recovering After Surgery

Following orthopaedic procedures or other surgeries, rehabilitation is essential.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may help support the body’s natural healing response while patients continue their physiotherapy programme aimed at restoring movement, strength and function.

Individuals Recovering from Injury

Whether the injury occurred during sport, work or everyday life, recovery depends on giving the body the right conditions to heal.

HBOT may provide additional recovery support for patients managing:

  • Fractures
  • Muscle tears
  • Tendon injuries
  • Joint injuries
  • Soft tissue trauma

People Living with Chronic Pain or Ongoing Inflammation

Many long-term musculoskeletal conditions involve persistent inflammation and reduced function.

When combined with physiotherapy, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may assist patients working towards improved movement, pain management and functional recovery.

Individuals Experiencing Fatigue or Burnout

Many people seek Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to support overall wellness, energy and recovery from prolonged physical or mental stress.

Improved oxygen delivery may contribute to a greater sense of recovery and wellbeing as part of a healthy lifestyle.

What Happens During a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Session?

Your HBOT session at BH Physio is designed to be comfortable and relaxing.

Before Your Session

One of our team members will explain the treatment process and answer any questions you may have.

You’ll then enter the comfortable Solid O2 Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber.

During the Session

As the chamber gently pressurises, you may notice pressure in your ears similar to what you experience during an aeroplane take-off.

This is completely normal and usually settles quickly.

Once the desired pressure is reached, you can:

  • Relax
  • Read a book
  • Use your mobile device
  • Listen to music
  • Simply rest

Our team remains available throughout the session should you need assistance.

After Your Session

The chamber slowly returns to normal atmospheric pressure.

You may be asked to swallow or yawn to help equalise pressure in your ears.

Afterwards, most patients are able to continue with their normal daily activities unless otherwise advised by their physiotherapist.
